If you have seen a robot performing a flawless backflip over the last ten years, it was built by Boston Dynamics. Spun out from MIT in the early 90s, they are the undisputed kings of complex kinematic balancing and dynamic locomotion control.
From Hydraulics to Electrics
For years, the legendary Atlas robot relied heavily on massive, extremely loud hydraulic pumps to generate the sheer violence required for acrobatic movement. However, recognizing the commercial and safety limitations of high-pressure fluid leaks, the company recently retired the hydraulic model, pivoting entirely toward completely electric actuator architectures that offer full 360-degree rotational joints.
Hyundai Acquisition
Following acquisitions by Google and SoftBank, Boston Dynamics is currently owned by Hyundai Motor Group. This provides massive manufacturing leverage, positioning them to scale the electric Atlas directly onto automotive assembly lines globally.
